Olla Bottle with Lid

Handcrafted terra cotta olla bottle with lid for deep root watering. Uses up to 85% less water and delivers moisture directly to plants with minimal evaporation.

The Olla Bottle with Lid is a tall, porous ceramic irrigation vessel designed to deliver steady, efficient watering directly to plant root zones. Trusted by gardeners for over a decade, this time-tested method uses the natural properties of terra cotta to regulate moisture based on what plants actually need. Each Olla is crafted from 100% domestically sourced terra cotta clay and manufactured in Tucson, Arizona, then fired to an optimal temperature to balance durability and controlled porosity. The top and matching lid are finished with a lead-free glaze to protect against oxidation and extend the life of the vessel. Completely non-toxic and safe for organic gardening.

When placed in the soil near plant roots, water stored inside the Olla Bottle with Lid slowly seeps through the unglazed ceramic walls. As the surrounding soil dries, moisture is naturally drawn outward, allowing roots to absorb water as needed. This passive, soil-responsive system can reduce water usage by up to 85% while minimizing evaporation and runoff. Because water is delivered below the surface, the soil above remains drier, helping to discourage pests and unnecessary moisture loss.

The Olla Bottle with Lid is available in 10", 12", and 14" heights (3" diameter). Before full saturation, the 10" size holds approximately 6 cups (⅜ gallon), the 12" holds 8 cups (½ gallon), and the 14" holds 10 cups (⅝ gallon) of water. For best results, bury the Olla with 2–3 inches of the neck exposed to prevent soil or mulch from entering the vessel.

Ideal for plants, trees, and shrubs that are difficult to irrigate with conventional drip systems, sprinklers, or hoses, the compact design saves valuable garden space and is easy to remove for inspection, seasonal changes, or winterization. Synthetic fertilizers may be added through the water; organic fertilizers are not recommended inside the vessel, as they can clog the ceramic pores.

A proven, low-tech watering solution that supports healthy root development, conserves water, and makes long-term plant care simpler and more reliable.
